De vriendelijke “beleggingsadviseur” die je maandenlang belt — en €25 miljoen uit Nederland haaldeThe friendly “investment adviser” who calls you for months — and took €25 million out of the Netherlands

In Nederland: ~550 aangiftes, bijna €25 miljoen schade. This is not a clever hack or an exotic memecoin. It is the scam that actually costs people in the Netherlands the most money: someone calls you, poses as a financial adviser, and patiently guides you through your “first investments”. The profit you see on screen does not exist. On 15 July 2026 police announced that an organisation with over 700 employees across some 20 call centres was pulling in an estimated €100 million a month this way. In the Netherlands: ~550 reports, nearly €25 million in damages.

Wat is er precies gebeurd? What exactly happened?

On 15 July 2026 Dutch police announced a series of arrests made in May and July in a major investment fraud investigation. The main suspect, a 46-year-old man with Israeli and Polish nationality, was arrested on 26 May at an airport in Poland — travelling from Dubai. He is suspected of playing a key role in a criminal organisation that police say has been active since at least 2021.

The organisation was set up like an ordinary company. There were around twenty offices in different countries, with one head office directing the rest. In total more than 700 “employees” worked there. Each office had multiple teams, and each team targeted a different country — including the Netherlands. Staff worked under pseudonyms and used technical means to hide their real identity and location.

The method is classic and painfully effective. The “financial advisers” or “account managers” were in touch almost daily with people wanting to start investing — by phone or online. By keeping that up for months, they built genuine trust. The first deposit was always a relatively small amount, and immediately showed a “profit”. The online platform where victims tracked their investments was indistinguishable from the real thing. But nothing was invested anywhere: the money — usually transferred in cryptocurrency — went straight into the fraudsters’ pockets.

In the Netherlands around 550 reports have now been linked to this organisation, with combined damages of nearly €25 million. In Belgium there are some 200 reports. Most victims in this investigation lost over €10,000. Worldwide police estimate tens of thousands of victims and a haul of over €100 million a month. Many victims did not even realise they were being defrauded; police approached them directly to prevent further losses.

— Alex, slachtoffer, in het politiebericht“All contact suddenly stopped. That’s when I realised: I’ve been badly scammed. The life I had pictured collapsed.” — Alex, victim, quoted in the police statement

The first four steps describe how a victim is reeled in. That pattern is nearly identical in every investment fraud — and therefore recognisable.

📞Stap 1 · het eerste contactStep 1 · first contact
You are called or contacted online by someone posing as a financial adviser or account manager. They work under a pseudonym, in a call centre aimed specifically at the Netherlands.
🤝Stap 2 · weken tot maandenStep 2 · weeks to months
Vertrouwen opbouwenBuilding trust
Er is bijna dagelijks contact. Vriendelijk, geduldig, behulpzaam. There is almost daily contact. Friendly, patient, helpful. They ask how you are doing. This is not rushed — the organisation takes months to build a real bond.
💶Stap 3 · de eerste inlegStep 3 · the first deposit
Klein bedrag, directe “winst”Small amount, instant “profit”
You start with a small amount. On the platform you immediately see a profit appear. That feels like proof it works — which is exactly the point. In reality nothing is invested.
📈Stap 4 · opschalenStep 4 · scaling up
Steeds meer inleggen — vaak in cryptoDepositing more and more — often in crypto
With friendly pressure and “clever tricks” you are encouraged to send more, usually in cryptocurrency. Most victims in this investigation lost over €10,000 this way. Suddenly, withdrawals no longer work.

De tweede golf: “recoverybedrijven”The second wave: “recovery firms”
Victims who stop are later called by a “recovery firm” claiming it can retrieve the money — after paying a deposit. According to police, those firms are likely part of the same criminal organisation.

De rode vlaggen — waar je op moet lettenThe red flags — what to watch for

This scam runs on psychology, not technology. You don’t need to understand any blockchain to spot it — you just need to know these seven signals:

01
Zíj benaderen jou — niet andersomThey approach you — not the other way round
An unexpected phone call, a DM, a follow-up to an ad you once clicked. Real, licensed investment firms do not cold-call you to help you invest. Being approached is itself an alarm bell.
02
Daily contact, interest in your family, patience when you hesitate. That is not service — it is the investment the fraudster makes before harvesting. The more personal the bond, the harder it becomes to say no.
03
Een kleine eerste inleg die meteen winst oplevertA small first deposit that instantly shows a profit
Just start with €250 and see how it works.” Within a day, a profit appears. Real markets are not that predictable. That first gain is not a result but a number on a screen, designed to buy your trust.
04
Je winst bestaat alleen op hún platformYour profit exists only on their platform
A slick dashboard with charts and returns proves nothing. It is a website they control, showing whatever numbers they choose. If you cannot verify your holdings independently — on a blockchain explorer or in your own wallet — you do not own anything.
05
Betalen in crypto naar een adres dat zíj aanwijzenPaying in crypto to an address they provide
Crypto is popular with fraudsters because a transfer is final: no bank can reverse it. If you are asked to convert euros into crypto and forward it to “your investment account”, stop immediately.
06
Opnemen kan niet — er moet eerst iets betaald wordenYou can’t withdraw — something must be paid first
When you try to withdraw, suddenly there is “tax”, a “release fee” or a deposit to pay. This is the moment the fraud becomes visible. Every euro you pay after this is guaranteed lost.
07
Later belt een “recoverybedrijf” dat je geld terughaaltLater, a “recovery firm” offers to get your money back
Police warn about this explicitly: after some time, victims are contacted by recovery firms promising to retrieve their money for a fee. These are likely the same criminals, draining you a second time.

Zes regels die je hiertegen beschermenSix rules that protect you

Never invest through someone who approached you. Choose a platform yourself and type the address yourself. If the initiative wasn’t yours, you don’t participate — however nice the person is.
Check the licence before you transfer a single euro. In the Netherlands, the AFM and DNB keep public registers of firms allowed to operate here — plus warning lists. If a name isn’t there, that’s the end of the conversation.
Profit on a screen is not ownership. Real crypto sits in a wallet whose keys you hold, or at a licensed exchange you can withdraw from yourself. A pretty dashboard is just a picture.
Always test a withdrawal — early and small. Try taking a small amount back right after your first deposit. If that doesn’t work without extra payments, you know enough before thousands are at stake.
Don’t feel ashamed — report it. Many victims didn’t even realise they were being scammed. File a report with the police and notify the AFM. It supports investigations like this one and prevents further losses.
Zonder uitzondering.Never pay to “recover” money. Any firm asking for a deposit to retrieve your lost crypto is a scam. Without exception.

Had de scam checker dit gevonden?Would the scam checker have caught this?

Our scam checker analyses token contracts on the blockchain: who owns them, whether selling can be blocked, how tokens are distributed. In this fraud there is no token and no contract. There is only a phone call, a friendly voice and a website that is entirely fake.

Doe deze drie vóórdat je iets overmaakt:For this type of fraud the check is a different one. Do these three before transferring anything:

Look up the name in the AFM register and on the AFM warning list — and type the AFM address into your browser yourself; never click a link they send.
Google the company name together with “oplichting”, “scam” or “review” — and check whether the company has any history beyond a few months.
Ask yourself one question: did the initiative come from me? If not, you stop. That single criterion would have protected almost every victim in this case.

The bottom line: the most dangerous crypto scam right now is not a technical trick. It is a patient human on the phone being nice to you for months.
