Address poisoning: de kopieer-plak-val die je crypto naar de oplichter stuurtAddress poisoning: the copy-paste trap that sends your crypto to the scammer

You want to send crypto, copy the address from your transaction history — and don't notice it's just slightly different. That's address poisoning: scammers place, in advance, an address that resembles one of yours (same start and end) in your history. In 2026 this trick exploded: attempts rose more than fivefold, and two victims lost about $62 million combined. The sting: crypto transfers are irreversible.

Hoe werkt address poisoning? How does address poisoning work?

A crypto address is a long, unreadable string of characters, for example 0x6D90…2E48. Because nobody memorises such a string, most wallets only show the start and the end and you copy the address by "pasting". It's exactly that habit scammers exploit.

The scammer creates a new address that starts and ends the same as one you often send to. Then they send you a tiny or empty transaction ("dusting") so that look-alike address appears in your history. The next time you quickly copy an address from your history, you might grab the wrong one.

In December 2025 an attacker spotted a $50 test payment, planted a fake address, and 26 minutes later the victim sent almost 50 million USDT to the wrong address. On 30 January 2026 someone lost 4,556 ETH (~$12.4 million) the same way. And the scale is growing: researchers say attempts rose from ~628,000 (November 2025) to ~3.4 million (January 2026).

The attacker had 'dusted' the victim with tiny transactions for two months. Then came one large transfer to the wrong address — 4,556 ETH, gone irreversibly.”

De tijdlijn — stap voor stapThe timeline — step by step

🎯 Stap 1Step 1
Using special software the scammer generates an address that starts and ends exactly like one you often send to.
💨 Stap 2Step 2
Dusting: het adres komt in jouw geschiedenisDusting: the address enters your history
They send you a tiny or empty transaction. Now their look-alike address sits among your real transactions — ready to be copied by mistake.
📋 Stap 3Step 3
Jij kopieert het verkeerde adresYou copy the wrong address
On your next transfer you quickly grab an address from your history. You only check the start and end — and they match. You paste the wrong address.
🕳️ Stap 4Step 4
You confirm the transaction. The crypto arrives at the scammer and is gone irreversibly — there's no bank to reverse it.

De pogingen stegen 5,5× in twee maanden. Twee slachtoffers verloren samen ~$62 miljoen. Attempts rose 5.5x in two months. Two victims lost ~$62 million combined. The trick is cheap and works even on experienced users.

De rode vlaggen — die je had kunnen zienThe red flags — that you could have spotted

These are the signals and habits that protect you:

01
See two nearly identical addresses? That's no coincidence. Someone deliberately planted one that resembles your real address.
02
Onverwachte piepkleine of lege transactiesUnexpected tiny or empty transactions
A tiny amount you don't recognise ("dusting") is often the first step. Its only goal is to get an address into your history.
03
Vertrouwen op alleen begin en eindTrusting only the start and end
Wallets tonen adressen verkort. Wallets show addresses shortened. Whoever checks only the first and last characters is checking exactly the part the scammer copied.
04
Kopiëren uit je transactiegeschiedenisCopying from your transaction history
Your history is exactly the place the scammer 'poisoned'. Prefer to copy an address from the source (e.g. the exchange or contact).
05
Haast bij een grote overboekingHaste on a large transfer
Large amounts are the target. That's exactly when a few extra seconds of checking is worth it — it cannot be reversed.

Check the WHOLE address. Not just the start and end, but also characters in the middle. That's the only real protection against this trick.
Use an address book / whitelist. Save trusted addresses under a name and use those, instead of copying from your history each time.
Send a small test amount first. Especially for large transfers: send a small amount, confirm it arrives, and only then send the rest.
Copy from the source, not from history. Get the address directly from the exchange, website or your contact — not from your transaction list.
5Negeer 'dust'. Ignore 'dust'. Don't click on or copy addresses from unknown tiny transactions. If you see something odd, be extra careful on your next transfer.

Had de scam checker dit gevonden?Would the scam checker have caught this?

No — and that's important to know. Address poisoning has nothing to do with a suspicious token contract. No coin is manipulated; you send your money to the wrong address with your own hand. A token checker can't stop that.

What protects you here is behaviour: checking the full address, using an address book and sending a test amount first. Our scam checker remains useful when buying tokens, but against this trap your own diligence is the only real protection.
