BlockBlasters: hoe een gratis Steam-game crypto-wallets leegroofdeBlockBlasters: how a free Steam game drained crypto wallets

It looked like an innocent 2D platformer. For nearly a month it actually was one. Then its creators pushed a silent update that turned the game into a crypto stealer — robbing hundreds of players of at least $150,000 in crypto. The most painful lesson: the "available on Steam" label is not a safety guarantee.

Wat was BlockBlasters?What was BlockBlasters?

Spelers gaven positieve reviews en de game bouwde langzaam vertrouwen op.BlockBlasters was a free 2D platformer that launched on Steam — the world's largest PC gaming platform — on 30 July 2026. It looked innocent: jumping, shooting, clearing levels. In its first weeks it genuinely was exactly that. Players left positive reviews and the game slowly built up trust.

On 30 August 2026 everything changed. The creators pushed a silent update that added malicious code to the game: a so-called crypto stealer. Anyone who launched the game after that unknowingly also ran a program that scanned the PC for crypto wallets and siphoned their contents off to the attackers' servers.

The deception worked precisely because it came from Steam. Many people think: "if it's on Steam, it's been checked and it's safe." That sense of trust was exactly the trap.

The game was clean for almost a month. Once the trust was there, the update struck. Build trust, then abuse it — that's the entire recipe.”

Through a game update the creators slip in malicious code. On launch the game now runs scripts that try to disable antivirus, collect Steam login details and the IP address, and search the PC for crypto wallets.

De rode vlaggen — die je had kunnen zienThe red flags — that you could have spotted

Toch waren er signalen — en vooral gewoontes — die het verschil hadden gemaakt:This type of attack is tricky, because the game really was safe for a while. Still, there were signals — and above all habits — that would have made the difference:

01
Crypto in een "hot wallet" op je game-pcCrypto in a "hot wallet" on your gaming PC
The crypto sat in a software wallet on the same computer that ran random games. Once malware gets access to your PC, it can read out such wallets and their seed phrases directly. That's the core of how this money disappeared.
02
Software aangeraden door een vreemdeSoftware recommended by a stranger
The streamer installed the game because someone in his chat suggested it. Installing unknown software on the advice of an anonymous stranger is always a risk — even when it looks like "just a game".
03
Programma dat je antivirus wil uitschakelenA program that wants to disable your antivirus
The malware tried to switch off security software. If a game or installer asks you to disable your virus scanner, or your scanner suddenly raises an alert — stop immediately. No legitimate game needs that.
04
"Het staat op Steam, dus het is veilig""It's on Steam, so it's safe"
Blijf zelf kritisch, ongeacht waar iets vandaan komt.A well-known platform does not vet every update of every game equally strictly. A badge or store is no guarantee that software can't touch your crypto. Stay critical yourself, regardless of where something comes from.

Seed-phrase digitaal op de computerSeed phrase stored digitally on the computer
Anyone who keeps their seed phrase (the 12 or 24 recovery words) in a text file, screenshot or password manager on the PC hands malware everything it needs. A seed phrase belongs offline — on paper or a hardware wallet.

Vijf gouden regels die dit hadden voorkomenFive golden rules that would have prevented this

Keep crypto on a hardware wallet. A hardware wallet keeps your keys offline. Even if your PC is infected, malware can't reach it.
Never disable your antivirus for a game or program. A request to do so is itself the biggest red flag.
Keep crypto and gaming separate. Ideally, don't use the same computer for random downloads and your crypto.
A platform badge is not a safety guarantee. "Available on Steam" doesn't mean every update is safe.
Store your seed phrase offline. Never in a file, screenshot or cloud on your computer — only on paper or hardware.

Had de scam checker dit gevonden?Would the scam checker have caught this?

No — and that's exactly an important lesson. Our scam checker examines the smart contract code of a token: honeypots, suspicious functions, unverified contracts. BlockBlasters wasn't a token and had no contract address. It was malware that ran directly on your computer.

A contract check doesn't help against this kind of attack, but healthy habits around your devices and wallets do:

✓ Hardware wallet — keys stay offline, out of malware's reach
✓ Up-to-date antivirus — and never disable it for a download
✓ Separate environment — don't keep crypto on your gaming or download PC
✓ Seed phrase offline — on paper or hardware, never in a file

The scam checker remains essential for tokens and contracts — but against malware, safe storage wins. Both come down to the same basic rule: keep your keys out of reach.
